Looking Back...Leaning Forward

I'm seriously delirious looking over some of the photos of past retreats, with the paints, papers and other materials spilling out all over the place. I'm deep into reminiscing, which is getting me even more excited about next February's An Artful Journey retreat.

I'm now officially in the 'creative design' mode, wondering what little gems will come to me in my dreams or in the shower...or where ever. (I do my best creative problem-solving in the water or while driving. When I'm out and about, I use Dragon Dictation to record my thoughts—it then sends me an email, so I don't lose the random ideas that pop up unexpectedly. But I'm still working on how to remember those fleeting thoughts when I'm in the shower—hmm, maybe a huge waterproof post-it note on the shower wall. Wouldn't that be great?!

For past retreats, I've had a blast making journals, bags, nametags, notepads, vintage bags, and other goodies. This is the time of year I start seeing inspiration everywhere: at flea markets, looking through photos, starting a creative project, and rummaging through my stash. I never know where it's all going to lead, but I know it's going to be good! I'm feeling the stirrings...

Right now, I'm inspired by looking through the class offerings here--have I mentioned how grateful I am that I have the most awesome instructors teaching for me?? I'm just thrilled to have all that talent in one place, at one time. The retreat is the perfect place to gather after the busy holiday season; it's a gift we should all give ourselves from time to time. It's a chance to renew our creative spirits and spend time with others who share the same artistic pursuits; time to take care of our selves after taking care of others around us; time to reawaken our passion. Registration opens on Tuesday at noon, Pacific time—I hope to see you there!

Checking in

I've been out of town taking care of my dad as he recovers from a burst appendix (he's doing great, for which I'm very thankful). I had planned on doing a different post while down here but in my haste to leave town, I neglected to put them into dropbox so I'd have access to them! So this will just have to do for now.

This is a pic of my dad's dining room table that I've taken over. I'm a bit obsessed right now with another of Mary Ann Moss's fabulous online classes, "Full Tilt Boogie". I have yet to complete a journal, but I've amassed about 10 books that are just waiting to be disemboweled and filled...lol! Some of them are vintage albums that I acquired late at night in a flurry of bidding on Ebay--I'm sure there are those of you who can relate!

On another note, I had so much fun being interviewed by Rice Freeman-Zachary for a podcast last week. She's so easy to talk to; it was as if we were sitting down at the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. We chatted about An Artful Journey and retreats and creativity--all that good stuff! You can listen to it by clicking on the sidebar link. I'm thrilled that she'll be attending the retreat and leading a panel discussion on creativity. Can't wait! Registration for the retreat opens just two weeks from now, so I hope you have it on your calendar. I expect some of the classes to fill pretty quickly!

Reentering

I had the luxury of spending a week by myself at Pine Mountain Lake, just south of Yosemite—just me and my books, journal, pen and paper, and tons of fresh fruit and vegetables from local farms. I had visited there exactly two years ago, and it was a turning point for me, a sacred time of healing; it holds a very special place in my heart.

With all the changes that have taken place in my life since then, it was comforting to be back in a space where time seemed to stand still. Even if it was only an illusion, it felt solid and grounded and was just what I needed.

And so the journey begins—and ends—and changes, as it does in every moment. The possibilities are endless and grander than we can ever imagine. I'm moving FORWARD and it's all good.

Looking for order...

as I move through the messiness of daily life. Not 'bad messy' necessarily, just the stuff that life is made of. I'm thinking about Einstein's Three Rules of Work:
1. Out of clutter, find simplicity.
2. From discord, find harmony.
3. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.

Seems pretty simple when you put it like that. Smart guy, that Einstein.

My webmaster has assured me that the workshops for the February 2012 retreat will be posted on the website for viewing this week, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Like many of us, she's had some unforeseen family issues come up, but I'm hopeful! She's done a wonderful job for me as she juggles a full-time job, new baby and family life.

You can look forward to spending 4 nights up at the Presentation Center in the redwoods of northern CA, and 3 full days with one instructor, just soaking up the creativity. The retreat will be held February 23-27, with registration opening online on July 12. Just look what you have awaiting you!

Mom Love

I'll admit it—Mother's Day is my favorite day of the year--better than my birthday. Way better. Being a mom is the toughest, most challenging, and most rewarding thing I'll ever do in my life, so why not celebrate it? Since both of my sons are now grown men with their own lives, it's harder for us to coordinate our calendars. Of course, we get together on the holidays, but there are always so many distractions then with the big meals, the gifts, meeting the needs of other family/friend obligations, etc.

Mother's Day is different--the focus is on us just being together, my sons and I (along with the girlfriend, guest doggy and grandgirlies this year). No fancy gifts needed, no dress-up brunch or dinner. Just give me some laughs with my guys and I'm good. My older son, Ryan, always comes up for Mother's Day, no matter what. He's never missed one, even though he's lived down south ever since he left high school for college. I love him for that.

And for the weekend, Forrest somehow manages to juggle the drama and keep the peace among the four females in his life—not an easy task, believe me! He and Ryan go out of their way to make me feel appreciated, and this year was so good that it was almost more than I could take. The care, the love, the sweetness they showed me was beyond description. It was the little things that I'll remember the most, among them the gift of the most heartfelt, tenderly written words from the soul of a poet.

We've had our struggles and our ups and downs, but we've always been there for each other--no matter what. I know I can count on them, and they can count on me. I'm enormously grateful, and am so, so proud of each of them. I only wish my own mother was still here to enjoy them...in spirit, yes she is.

My guys are very different, and yet they are similar in the ways that truly matter—they are kind, they are wise, they are loyal, they are love. To all you young moms out there struggling with the growing-up years of a colicky baby, or a fussy toddler, or the difficult teen years—just hold on. The best is yet to come...

(and don't even get me started on the grandgirlies--I'm one very blessed mom and grand mom)

Hidden treasures...

I've been going to the Alameda Antiques Faire for years, and have visited the Euro-Linens large booth many times—but last month I had the opportunity to chat with the owner, Dani, and learn more about their business and the process they use to make their pillows. I fell in love with the pillows made from vintage cotton mill sacks from France. She and her husband, Erik, started their cottage industry together, and they have really top-quality items.

I had to leave the Alameda without purchasing from them, since my car was filled to the brim and I had already spent more than I had intended. But I couldn't get those pillows out of my mind, so I decided to drive to La Selva Beach last week to check out Patine, the little shop that they run their business out of.

What a wonderful little enclave La Selva is, just tucked into the coast there. It's a little treasure, quietly welcoming those who enter.

I spent the better part of the afternoon drooling over everything in the store, taking photos, and visiting with Dani. Her husband, Erik. stopped by as well, so I got a chance to meet him too. He designs and creates the pillows, doing all the sewing himself. Sounds like a keeper to me! What a warm, friendly couple they are; it was such a pleasure to get to know them.

In addition to the pillows, I ended up with a bit of jewelry, candles, and a couple of vintage shirts. If I had unlimited funds, I would have scooped up everything in that store--the furniture, the artwork, more pillows, light fixtures, clothing, everything.

This is the shop watchdog--the only thing that's not for sale!

When I look at the pillows, I'm reminded of the peaceful afternoon I spent on my solo drive, finding the gem of this little community, and most importantly, making a new friend. If you're ever in the area, I encourage you to stop by—Dani would love to see you.

What's in a word anyway?

This post started out simply enough... I was going to say that I had been hibernating somewhat, and now I'm back. That sounded kind of lackluster though; I was curious if there was a word or phrase for that--being back, that is. What's the opposite of hibernate? Dehibernate? Unhibernate? Nope, no such words. I did come across the word aestivate, which means, "to lie dormant in the summer". Following this logic, then I was "dormant in the winter". I wish that were the case, but far from it. There were the holidays, family crazies, the retreat, appointments, family crazies, spring cleaning, family crazies--you get the picture.

So I began to question whether I'd been 'hibernating' after all. As I investigated further, words like lethargic, idle and vegetate came up. Uh, not exactly. And the more I googled (yep, it's an official verb), the darker it got. I was led down the path of decay, rot and sloth. Was it true that I had actually been in a state of pandiculation, odiosity or even statuvolence? Could I really have piddered, pudded, dabbled and faddle fribbled my time away? That couldn't have possibly been the case--after about two hours of this, I slapped myself and came out of my stupor.

The bottom line is that I'm now I'm so confused that I don't know where I was—but I do know where I wasn't! And I know where I'm going, or more precisely, where I think I'm going. How about you?

On the last day of the workshops, we held a Show and Tell so that all the students could see what's been going on in other classrooms during the week. It's so great to see the amazing artwork that comes out of the 3-day classes. It's usually the time where attendees also see what other instructors they may want to sign up for in the future. Lots of energy in the room!

Now it's full steam ahead preparing for the next Journey--I'll post registration info and classes later this spring. It's not too early to plan a special get-away for yourself next year!

Coming up for air...

The fog is finally lifting after the Journey retreat! I'm still unpacking things, following up with the Center on some details, debriefing, and now planning for next year's event. I'm SO excited to officially announce that the Journey will continue (just finalized the contract tonite!) next February, the 23rd - 27th, with another great group of instructors: Albie Smith, DJ Pettitt, Tory Brokenshire, Flora Bowley and Katie Kendrick. Each of them will be teaching a 3-day class within their genre, although the specific workshops have not been finalized yet. But honestly, I don't know how attendees will be able to choose just one. If you're unfamiliar with any of their work, just check out their blogs--amazing talents, each of them!!

Stay tuned for details in the coming months, with registration opening sometime in July. I have a feeling it will fill up quickly, especially with the other fun things I have in mind. I'm so fortunate to be able to hold these events--thanks to all for making my dreams come true!

So, back to the most recent event...I have lots more photos, but for now--feast your eyes, and mark your calendars to join us next year!

Update from Max...

Hey, it's me, Max. Cindy's busy preparing for the Journey retreat, so she asked if I would give a quick update. Of course, ~~she'll pay for it later~~ I'm happy to step in. (It took me forever to figure out how to re-size photos, but I think I've got it.) Anyway, she's got the sewing machine going at all hours, and has lots of fabric piles laying around for me to play in. I don't know what all the fuss is about, but she seems pretty happy about it.

She did want me to mention that registration closes on January 31, and that there are still a couple of spots in Orly's class if you'd like to join in--the other classes are filled, but there's still a little bit of room up at the Center. Apparently, she's really looking forward to spending some time up in the redwoods with a bunch of people that like to do art. (Great--who's gonna take care of ME?) I don't know why she's so anxious to get out of here, but she's crossing the days off her calendar.

That's pretty much all she's been doing lately, except for when these ~~annoying~~ darling little creatures come over, and then everything stops and she turns into some lovey-dovey mush.

I'll never understand what the big deal is with them, but whatever. Their arrival is my cue for running out the door and ~~terrorizing~~ wandering the neighborhood. All I ask is for some peace and quiet; ~~expensive~~ special food; nice clothes to lay on; furniture to keep my claws sharpened; and some loving attention, especially in the middle of the night. I don't think that's unreasonable, especially considering all the ~~rats, mice, birds~~ gifts that I bring her. Geez.

I guess that's about it, except that I overheard her saying that she's got another retreat scheduled for February of 2012, and will be announcing the instructors soon. She says it's going to be another great lineup, and that people should put it on their calendar. I don't know any more about it, but she'll probably be in touch with you soon on the details All this enthusiasm and 'happy happy' is really ~~nauseating~~ something.

I've got to get back to ~~my nap~~ supervisory role; besides, my paws are killing me from all this typing. I hope you enjoyed this ~~immense sacrifice I made~~ little update. Just don't expect to hear from me anytime soon (she can do her own dang blog post next time; this is for the birds).

Holiday Tips, Part Two

Fortunately for you readers, I had yet another Sunday that resulted in even more holiday tips! So here you go:

1) Before you make not one, but two trips to the store to purchase tree lights, and then put them ALL on the tree, be sure and check the contents of the grocery bag that's been sitting all week in the corner with the ornaments. You never know.
2) Consider whether you really want flashing lights before you put the blinker bulbs on, string all 800 lights on your tree, and put up all the ornaments. They just might be more irritating than listening to "Jingle Bells" over and over again. It's true.
3) When taking entire strings of lights off of the tree because, a) you can't find the one little bulb that causes the string to blink, or b) the whole string goes dead and you don't know why, it's much more satisfying to cut the darn thing off with clippers and just toss the all the pieces in the trash (after all, you have an entire grocery bag full of extra lights!)

4) When you use clippers to cut the long strings off, be careful that you don't accidentally cut into another one that was meant to stay on the tree.
5) When you attempt to add the new strings of lights to the already decorated tree, it's best to not have young children around, just in case a few choice words slip out.
6) When picking up the shattered ornaments, be sure and use a broom and dustpan so as not to cut yourself.

7) Keep that broom and dustpan handy as you admire your handiwork, just in case the dog's tail does a major sweep across the beautifully decorated tree. Sigh...

Just being real...

I was feeling a bit like this raven lunatic at times today, but I learned a few things, and that's always good. I thought I would share them with you, to possibly save you a little time and trouble. I'm always wanting to help, you know. Maybe you already know some of them, but just in case, here are a few of my learnings and (mostly) holiday tips:

If your mood is already 'iffy', going through the garage and pulling out all the holiday decorations is not going to help improve it. Seriously.
If somebody (a grown son, let's say) offers to put up the outdoor lights, don't assume that just because he's an engineer, he'll actually think through where the cords will be plugged in. You might just find yourself having to plug them in in three different places (one being the dark corner of the garage that requires the use of a flashlight); with a long extension cord hanging down the side of the house from the 2nd floor; and another thick cord coming in through a window on the 2nd floor so that you can't close it. It could happen.
Before you go meandering through the neighborhood because there's a break in the rainy weather, turn off the homemade soup that's heating on the stove.
If something has not been displayed in years, count on it taking ten times longer to set up than it should. (For example, a German wooden pyramid purchased 30 years ago when living in Hamburg.) By the time you dust it using Q-tips to get in the tiny spaces, glue together the loose candle holders, take it apart to figure out why it's not spinning smoothly, put it back together again, glue loose candle holders together again ~~and again and again~~, then finally get it going, you'll have lost a couple of hours and it'll be dark outside.
It's a mathematical certainty that 80% of the glues you own are dried up (this isn't so much a tip, more like a fact.) Count on it.
Do not expect the cute little kitty to be as excited about the reindeer kitty hat as you are.
Always keep tissue handy ~~for when~~ in case kitty draws blood.

But the best tip of all? When your frustration level reaches a peak, a good old-fashioned grilled cheese sandwich will change everything! True!

Of course, it'll all be worth it when the grand-girlies lay their eyes on the magical twirling pyramid (just so long as we keep cute kitty's tail away from the flames). Ahh, note to self: keep the fire extinguisher within easy reach...

Getting to Know Orly...

I am SO very honored to have Orly Avineri joining us in February for An Artful Journey Winter Retreat. I was fortunate to meet Orly at Journalfest last year, and I wanted you to meet her as well! She was gracious enough to answer a few questions that reveal who she is as an artist and as a person. You would be giving yourself a great gift to spend time with her this winter. (Honestly, I would pay to have her read the phone book, she's got such a presence about her.) You just can't help but smile when you're around her, and come away knowing that everything will be fine, better than fine.

I know that you enjoy teaching in natural settings--can you tell us more about that?
Although I fully enjoy living in the proximity to urban settings and happenings, I crave closeness to nature. I yearn for a direct, sensorial, and tactile relationship with the soil in which plants grow. I long to see natural beauty, smell pines or eucalyptus, touch natural textures, and hear the rain through the stillness of the earth. It is through the stillness that my senses are filled up and strong urges to create emerge. I believe that others are looking to have the same sensations and to evoke similar urges in themselves. We all need a space to connect our inner landscapes with those around us. An Artful Journey will provide such space.

How does your environment influence your art?
All the environments in me and those that surround me influence my art; material, time, geography, and my emotional world. Chaotic environments bring about raw and honest expressions. However, minimized noise, quieted inner and outer voices, reduced clutter and distraction, bring about art that is contemplative in nature. Art that is revelatory yet holds mystery.

When did art enter your life, and how did it manifest itself?
It entered when I did. As long as I remember. When all was inconstant and love did not seem to be readily available, a piece of paper and a pencil always were. Later on my doodles and drawings provided me with welcomed yet unexpected attention, attention I didn't seem to draw from just being me. Then my creativity was tremendously uplifted by a new spirited mother that appeared in the second half of my childhood years. Since the beginning and till today, art has provided me with the sweetest sense of identity. It is in art that I can lose myself and be found, all at the same time.

What recurring themes come up for you in your journaling?
My own, very special contradictions, fascinate me. Attempting to unify myself through the practice of art journaling seems to be keeping me creating. The interplay between opposing elements, paradoxes, inconsistencies of memories and views of my worlds are constantly expressed in my journals. Concepts of vibrancy and darkness, being prolific vs. having an artist block, innate creativity vs. learned, being outgoing vs. painfully shy, being benevolent vs. selfish, loving vs. holding back, being complex vs. simple...that sort of thing...the list goes on and on. The broad theme can be found throughout my work.

What sets your journaling workshops apart from others?
Art journaling for me is the most honest form of art. The most compelling element of it is that rather than create with beauty in mind, beauty comes into view through the process of creating. It's the ultimate form of expression and as such I have a holistic approach to it. Interdependence, balance, and interplay between physical and spiritual aspects of the process are highly encouraged through thought and emotion provoking prompts, introduction of unconventional materials, and engagement in unfamiliar processes and techniques, personal explorations and discoveries.

Your work is so deep and thoughtful; what has been your greatest influence?
I believe my work was greatly shaped by a deep sense of lack. Absence of things that I greatly needed. It emerged from empty places. My voids influenced it. It is from the nothingness that my need to fill up blank pages came about, to create spaces that are self-sufficient, worlds that are rich. My work contains my world and those worlds I create for myself. It clearly defines my needs for me and fulfills them in a peculiar way.

What do you hope your students come away with, particularly when having the luxury of spending 3 uninterrupted days with you?

The great escape

A couple of weeks ago my friend, Robin, and I took off for the tiny town of Neskowin on the Oregon coast. We had nothing planned, nowhere we had to be—we packed up her car and left Portland behind as we meandered down the highway toward the coast. We stayed in a funky condo right on the water, and spent a blissful five days doing whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.

We stitched (well, mostly she stitched); we watched the ocean change moods almost hourly; we ate a whole lot of really good food; we walked a bit; we went rummaging through antique shops; we drove; we ate some more.

I took a good fall one morning when I ran outside and slipped in the mud, landing flat on my back. Check out the cool mud pattern on my sleep shirt (yes, I still had my jammies on--don't ask). This is only a smidgen of the damage to my clothes; I completely ruined a brand-new sweatshirt. Luckily, I was able to ~~limp~~ walk away with just a bruised tailbone and some neck/back pain for a few days. I got off easy, that's for sure. A good reminder for me to slow down...

Robin and I met some years back when we both attended Artfest and shared a rental car from Seattle to Port Townsend. I had already planned to stay over in downtown Seattle for a couple of days after the retreat, but Robin was due to head back to Sacramento. On the way to the airport, she turned to me and asked if she could use my phone. She called her husband and told him she'd like to stay a couple more days...and the rest, as they say, is history. We don't get to see each other more than once or twice a year, but we just pick up where we left off. Our friendship is easy, and solid, and true--and I'm very grateful for it. It sure is comforting to know there's someone by your side just in case you take a little tumble from time to time.

And boy, was I in for a big surprise when I got back home. Max had taught himself how to read while I was gone—take a look!

If you've been intending to sign up for the February Retreat, you might want to rush on over and register--most classes are almost filled, as is the Center! I'm thrilled with the response, and so pleased that there are so many returnees. It's going to be a really wonderful, creative respite after the hustle-bustle holiday season.
With the weather keeping me inside most of the past couple of days (crazy sun, rain, sun, hail, rain, sun, etc, etc. here in northern CA), I've been playing around with my Iphone photo app a little. Who knew?! (Probably everyone but me...) And aren't those cool ribbons? They just may end up somewhere in the gifties that I'm making for the journeyers. Hmmm....

This is my favorite corner in my family room, with flea-market dresser, vintage chair, and yes, that's one of Stephanie Lee's art pieces on the wall. LOVE her work! She'll be teaching here in February as well--lucky us!

Max is also using the weather as an excuse to hunker down and get cozy. Smart cat, that one!

Gremlins

I randomly picked a book off my shelf the other day (although I don't believe in accidents) and it turned out to be "12 Secrets of highly creative wome n" by Gail McMeekin. It's been on my shelf for years, but I've not really paid attention until now. I've been working my way back to my creative self, and there are some really thought-provoking passages in there. One of the chapters talks about our 'saboteurs' or inner critics, and this is pretty much what mine looks like. He's not a pleasant fellow at all. He's opinionated, bossy, and just plain nasty at times. He expects perfection, is judgmental, and he doesn't like criticism one bit. Since he lives with me, I decided to do some sleuthing and find out more about him, and what makes him tick.

Now that I understand his inner workings a bit more, I'm standing up to him instead of shooing him away and pretending he doesn't exist. I'm on to him now, and I'm taking my power back. I can now hear him out, thank him for his opinion, and then go on my merry way.

Once in awhile he has a good point, but mostly it's clear that he's just got his own issues. Biggest learning: It's not about me. Now that's powerful!

My goal is to end up living here, and I'm getting there, one step at a time. How about you?

This photo pretty much describes how I've felt a good part of the past few weeks. The change of seasons and a few of life's curve balls hurled my way took the wind out of my sails for a bit, leaving me with little energy. I hate it when that happens! But I'm now back in the swing of things--getting excited for the holidays, looking forward to time spent with friends, and preparing for the February retreat. Lots of good stuff coming up!

Fortunately, I did manage to get up to Oregon to visit DJ for a few days--we spent some quiet time exploring country roads; meeting up with a fellow friend and fabulous artist/instructor; eating good food; and of course, taking photos. I didn't take many good ones, but I do like this one. Now you know how she gets all those great angles...lol!

And we came across this sweet little face in our travels one day.

The second part of our visit was back here in northern CA--we drove back down here, where DJ was finally able to go to the Alameda flea market with me. As we were nearing the end of the day, I was thinking I was getting off easy, having bought only a small handful of goodies. And then I saw this...

And what do you know, they both fit in my car perfectly! I had no intention of buying a mirror and a dresser, but as I walked around, I couldn't stop thinking about them. That's when I knew they were meant to come home with me! DJ shared some great photos of the day on her blog; she has a special way of seeing things, and captures images like nobody else. I'm so in awe of her work, as a photographer and as an artist.

And it thrills me that she loves to come up with ideas for the retreat! We got some felting needles, and she went crazy making these little flowers. So guess what I'll be incorporating into the Journey goodies?

On a completely different note, look what I got in the mail the other day! Another good friend found out that I'd never had a pear from Harry & David, so she surprised me with this goodness. I am so grateful to have such generous, uplifting souls in my life.

Ping pong, anyone?

I've been feeling a bit like a ping pong ball in a clothes dryer lately (with bouts of stillness in-between), so bear with me if this post jumps a bit too! There are so many things that I'm excited about doing, that I find myself bouncing around between them all. Good thing I can still bounce pretty well, even if my bones do creak a little.

One of the highlights was a trip down to Santa Barbara a couple of weeks ago to visit my oldest son, Ryan—what a treat that was. I don't get to spend nearly enough time with him.

Because I'm always looking for inspiration and cool artsy stuff for the retreats, we headed south to Summerland and Carpinteria, poking our heads into various galleries and antiques shops. A friend said that Just Folk is a must-see, and wow, was she right! A great selection of folk art and outsider art. One of their recent acquisitions is a collection of works by Bill Traylor—small pieces painted on bits of cardboard. They start at $85,000, so they were a bit out of my price range (!), but I did pick up a poster that the gallery had put together. Now I won't worry if the grandkids run into it and knock it off the wall! It's a really wonderful gallery, and the owners are very personable and interesting. Highly recommended!

On Sunday, we went down to the Arts and Crafts show down on the beach in Santa Barbara—beautiful weather, great company and lots to see. The one artist that really caught my eye was Neal Crosbie—I love his work! The photo doesn't do it justice at all, so check out his website. Best of all, he's the nicest guy; so genuine and humble. We spent quite a bit of time chatting with him, and getting to know him a bit. That's always the best part. I'm looking forward to purchasing a piece of his work, along with his book, Everything Be OK. I'll buy that.

Now, I've heard of people who look like their dogs, but never one who looked like their car...lol!

In stark contrast to the colorful art show was the Arlington West War Memorial display—it was on the other side of the pier, so I would have missed it if my son hadn't told me about it. Very powerful. No words needed.

I wish I could have stayed longer, as there's so much to do in the area, and a few people that I would have liked to have gotten to know, like these folks. They seem like they'd be very interesting, don't you think?

I've also been attempting an online class here and there. I say attempting because I have an irritating habit of signing up when I don't really have the time to fully participate—it's on my 'do better' list. (I don't like making resolutions, but a 'do better' list sounds reasonable to me.) Even though the classes have ended, I'm doing the exercises and playing every chance I get, bouncing from photoshop to stitching cloth, and then to my new-found obsession with zentangles (how did I miss this?), along with a sudden compulsion to carve rubber stamps. These last two are very meditative (the stillness part), especially when I'm sitting in the backyard with the sound of the water fountain in the background.

On the business side of things, registrations for the 3rd AAJ retreat next February are going great! It feels like a very special group of attendees (as are all of them), with a lot of repeat customers—always a good sign! There are still openings in all the workshops, but only a couple of spots in two of the classes. I'll be highlighting each class/instructor in future posts, but you can check out their blogs/websites by going to the Instructors page. A seriously talented, awesome, generous group (did I say talented?)—I'm so fortunate that they want to teach here!

We're having a bit of summer here (finally), so are doing our best to keep cool. Hope you're enjoying your weekend!

Only three more days until registration opens for the Feb. 2011 retreat! This all-inclusive retreat will take place from Feb. 17-21, with a maximum of 90 students. If you're planning on joining us, I suggest you register early as I expect some classes to fill quickly, especially since I've reduced the sizes. I am so excited for this one--it feels like a real winner already, with such a wild range of creative instructors. Do read the class descriptions carefully and check out the instructors' blogs so you know exactly what type of treat you're in for.

Orly Avineri's class focuses on nature journaling, and is sure to touch your soul in the deepest places.

Stephanie Lee will take you on a whirlwind ride exploring the many possibilities of using plaster in various art forms.

Nina Bagley is sharing her latest jewelry-making techniques with you, this time incorporating crocheting and fabric hearts in her pieces.

Albie Smith will share her wealth of knowledge in creating original papers of your design, which you'll then bind into a book of your choosing.
And Jesse Reno will open up a wellspring of creativity you didn't know existed in you, with his fearless painting class.

This is SUCH a strong lineup of creative talent and energy, that you can't possibly go wrong with any of them. It just depends on where your heart leads you at this time!

Registration begins this Tuesday, August 10, at 9am Pacific time. Registration is online only, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. I hope to see you there!

On why I've been MIA...

I could write a list a mile-long to explain my blog absence, but then you'd get bored and fall asleep by the time you reached #137. I considered doing blog "installments," but then I realized it would take me at least another 3 months to finish, as I tend to make things much more complicated than they ever need to be.

Once I remembered the old 'KISS' adage--Keep It Sorta Simple--I started breathing a little deeper and was able to start in on this post (yeh, I know it's supposed to be 'keep it simple, stupid', but I never liked the 'stupid' part, so I changed it. It suits me much better now).

But if I HAD done installments, these would likely have been the general categories:

1. Preparing for the Journey retreat (including lots of silly fun with DJ here)

2. Being swept up by another awesome Artful Journey experience...truly amazing! (Go to my Flickr page to see lots more pics)

Apparently we weren't the only ones who thought it was a good idea to spend the holiday at the Alameda Antiques Faire. Actually, the crowds were much lighter than usual, and a few of the vendors were missing. But look! Lots of goodies and strange folks there as usual.

Harvey was there with his fabulous warm, melt-in-your mouth donuts. And now he offers donut sundaes--have you ever?! If you find yourself at the flea market, run, do not walk, to his booth and treat yourself. Seriously. They are beyond yummy! The donuts were just the first course; Stephanie and I set up a little picnic area to eat the main course—I knew that old quilt would come in handy!

Tinsel Trading Co. had some very cool stuff, as always. And what about these shoes? Don't you just wonder where the little feet that wore them are now? What stories they could tell...

There always seems to be plenty of body parts, and bodies missing parts....

I found myself looking over my shoulder more than once, as there seemed to be some unsavory characters there.

And then there are the folks who snap photos incessantly, so consider a disguise if you don't want to be recognizable on someone's blog.

I do love seeing all the glamour girls who show up in all their finery. I envy the way they always look so calm, cool and collected, even in the heat.

I found some goodies for the attendees of the upcoming *retreat, but my 'get' of the day was this old tea box from Boston, MA. It had my name written all over it--literally! I'm slowly taking back my maiden name of Woods, so this was a 'sign' that it was meant to come home with me.

All in all, a really great Fourth of July—hope yours was too!

Trekking towards the journey...

Preparations are in full swing here for the upcoming retreat. I thrive on the flurry of activity, jumping from one thing to another, crossing things off the list, and finding solutions to the challenges that inevitably arise.
One of the things that's most important to me is to make retreat items with my own hands, and to use recycled/repurposed materials whenever possible. It's so rewarding when an idea takes hold and I can bring it to fruition. Sewing fabric, tearing ribbon, putting together bags of ephemera—lots of love goes into it all, which is why I choose to hold small retreats. This is what makes it such a joy for me.

Of course, it's always nice to have some help too. Max lends a hand whenever he's not out chasing down the blue jays, or gifting me with rodents.

In the midst of all of this, I'm getting ready to post the classes for the Feb. 2011 retreat as well. And wow, oh wow, are they great!! Stay tuned for more on that next time...

I'm SO excited to announce that the 3rd Artful Journey will take place February 17-21, 2011! I'm thrilled to have Stephanie Lee, Albie Smith and Nina Bagley returning to teach, and to welcome newcomers (to An Artful Journey), Orly Avineri and Jesse Reno.

We're working on the class descriptions, and the info will be up on the website around mid-July, but here's what I do know:

Nina is developing a "glorious" jewelry workshop especially for An Artful Journey! She's thrilled to be teaching here again, and I'm certain that her class will be amazing...as always.

Orly is offering a 3-day nature journaling workshop, "exploring the vast nature that is all around us while discovering our own expansive nature, that of our fellow journeyers, and the many ways that we are all mysteriously and beautifully connected."

Jesse's art is all about painting, and his class is suitable for beginners, advanced students, and everyone in-between. His work is magic, and he's anxious to share his techniques and how he approaches his art with his students.

Stephanie's workshop will focus on working with plaster, presenting techniques and projects from the book that she and Judy Wise are working on (due out next May!) In Stephanie's words, "I'm always amazed at how transformed and inspired students are after playing with plaster. They are intrigued when they sign up and then by the end of class, they are in love with the surface, with all the incredible things they can do with it. It really is an amazing medium."

Albie will once again be offering a 3-day exploration of color, design and techniques for putting together a journal of your own design. Her class this past February was very popular, and those who didn't take it wish they had!

Registration will open August 10 at 9am pacific time. I do expect some of the classes to sell out quickly, especially since I've lowered class sizes a bit as well. It would be great if you joined us!

Color-full days

Out and about, focusing on color. It seems to be sprouting up everywhere lately.

How cool are these birdhouses made of wood and metal? Makes me want to go hunt down my tin snips...

Having grown up with two brothers, and then having two sons, I didn't do the girlie stuff (even now my friends can't talk me into a pedicure). Now that I have two granddaughters, maybe I'll make up for lost time. At the very least, I can practice on them...they're very forgiving. For now.

Retreat time—coming soon!

Hey folks--there's still time to sign up for a relaxing 3-day workshop up here in northern CA from July 18-22! Preparations are underway for yet another fabulous retreat experience. Just 8 weeks away!

In addition to Richard Salley and Katie Kendrick (who were highlighted in my last post), DJ Pettitt and Stephanie Lee are also joining us (there are only a couple of spots left in each of their classes). This will be DJ's last workshop stateside (sniff, sniff), so if you've been wanting to take a class in-person with her, here's your chance! I'm actually very, very happy for her that she'll be spending more time at home with her darling hubby and four-legged kids, focusing on products and online workshops. DJ will be teaching Synergy of Forms, developed especially for An Artful Journey. In her words, "Using fluid acrylics, water-soluble pencils, tissues, and other mediums, I'll teach you how to meld the illustrative, abstract look with the more traditional art forms." DJ's work is so unique, and she's a fantastic instructor. This class is suited for all levels—she's a very generous, patient instructor, and is committed to seeing that each of her students get the attention they need and deserve. If working with metal is more up your alley, then take a look at Stephanie Lee's class, Foundology! She's a master at metal-smithing, creating phenomenal jewelry and objects. As she explains, "With just a few basic tools strapped to our belts, we’ll don our expedition gear as we set out to bend, hammer, form, solder and explore various techniques in working with metal to unearth a soldered metal box and jewelry to go in it." I've had the pleasure of taking a class with Stephanie, and even though I'd never worked with metal, I had a blast--what a great instructor! She does great demos, explains everything very clearly, and is then on hand to assist each attendee with their work. Plus, she's funny and fun, and authentic--a rare gem, that one. Her class is almost full, with just two spots available, so hurry on over and check it out here.

And don't forget Richard Sally's class, where he'll be using cold-connection techniques to create fabulously innovative jewelry using common and not-so-common objects! (buffalo tooth, anyone?)

The July retreat will be here before we know it (July 18-22, to be exact)! I've been organizing my stash of vintage fabrics and ephemera, clearing space for the sewing machines (yes, plural), and gearing up to create some special goodies for the attendees.

I'm so glad to have something FUN and creative to look forward to! With all the doom and gloom assaulting us on a daily basis, we must carve out personal time to restore our spirit. Spending four days with a bunch of like-minded souls is just the answer. How about you? Isn't it about time you carved out some creative time for yourself?

There's still room at the Center, although not for long, so if you're thinking of joining us and staying on-site, you'll want to register soon. A couple of the classes are almost full, so don't procrastinate or you might miss out. You can check out all the offerings here, but I want to highlight a couple of the instructors now, and will do a couple more in my next post. (Don't want to overwhelm you with too much eye candy at once!)

Katie Kendrick is teaching a workshop titled Dream Narratives. Now how soothing and soulful does that sound?? She just sent me another photo of her work—I am just loving this! (Be sure and click on the image to see the details)

If you follow her blog, you know that she's taking a year off from teaching next year. What?! How can that be? Well, she's listening to her heart and taking time out for her Self. Can't argue with that one little bit. But, it means that she won't be around for a while, so you might just want to catch her while you can. She's an amazingly giving instructor, very patient and soft-spoken, and oh-so generous with her talent. I defy anyone to take a class from her and not fall in love with her. I'm serious.

Her class description reads, in part, "We’ll be mono-printing and stenciling on fabric, using image transfer techniques, simple thread paintings, and drawing and painting on fabric using acrylic paints, oil paintstiks, pencils, pens, and markers. I will also cover basic elements of design, and various ways to create texture and movement with fabric. You’ll then adorn your ‘stories’ with journaling, hand-stitching, embroidery, trims and embellishments—whatever moves you!" OH YUM!
And Richard Salley is instructor extraordinaire, having been an art educator for years and years and...well, a very long time. He now travels all over, sharing his knowledge and talent in jewelry, assemblage—all things artistic . He's teaching a 3-day workshop jewelry workshop packed with cold-connection techniques. As he describes it, "One of the things that I enjoy most about working in the genre of 'found object jewelry' is to take something that we see or use on a daily basis and incorporate it into a piece of wearable art. Whether you are an experienced art jeweler or looking for your first class in jewelry making, you’ll learn a wealth of tips, tricks and techniques that you can apply to your own jewelry and assemblage projects."

As you can see, his pieces are just jaw-dropping, and many of his students are repeat customers. (That tells you just about everything you need to know right there.) With his expert guidance, you too can walk out with creations such as these. Can you imagine?! Next time, I'll focus on the work of DJ Pettitt and Stephanie Lee! We'd really love to have you join us in beautiful northern California this July--the Center is up in the redwoods, just 20 min. east of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 45 min. south of San Francisco, and 1 hour north of Monterey.

There's so much to see and do in the Bay area—even if you don't want to stray too far, Los Gatos and the surrounding area can keep you busy for a good while. More on that in the next post too...

Liquid gold...

When I saw this on my recent getaway, I saw a heart, a heart that needed to be tended to. A dear friend of mine saw "an opening"—to walk into; to guide towards; to new possibilities. An opening it is then. An opening to my heart.

I had packed one of my favorite books, Broken Open (which I highly, highly recommend), by Elizabeth Lesser. When I opened it, my eyes went straight to a passage where she asks, "was...the peace and clarity I was searching for already within me, waiting in the liquid gold of my feeling heart?" It was not an accident that I was led to that page; it was exactly what I needed to hear.

I decided to make space to listen to that feeling heart of mine, to "use my heart's compass on this journey", as Lesser writes. I began while up in those beautiful redwoods this past week.

I met up with some 'deer' friends.

I looked through the lens.

I sat at this desk and played in the silence.

I walked the labyrinth.

I danced by the light of the moon (really, I did).

I listened.

And then I came home...to these precious loved ones. My heart is full.

Life's been showing up over and over again here lately. It's a reminder to stay focused on what's really important.

Being still and appreciating nature and all its miracles...

Being grateful for what I have, and for those around me...

And most importantly, loving and being loved...

Staying in gratitude is what keeps me grounded when everything around me is in turmoil.

On another topic, I'm sure most of you have bunnies on your mind right now (saw these at a local shop), but I've been suffering from MOD lately (Molly Obsessive Disorder). March Madness

Forget basketball--this is a much better way to spend the month of March! I've been collecting even more treasures to share with attendees at the July retreat! I stumbled across an estate sale where the owner had been a costume designer for the theater--I was in heaven, diving for things before the antique dealers could claim them. It was the next best thing to winning the lottery (maybe even better!)

And there were more goodies to be had at the Alameda earlier this month, where it's just as much fun to people-watch as it is to hunt for stuff. The only problem is that I spend so much of my time scanning for hidden treasures, that I forget to look up! I was talking to a friend the other night and we were saying how hard it is to meet up with people we know there because we're always searching the aisles; the only time we actually 'see' someone we know is when we're grabbing for the same thing...lol!

Char, Stephanie, Lorri and I managed to finagle seats at this fabulous table (check out those embroidered chair seats!); we were happy to show folks what a great dining experience they could have if they purchased it. The owner was very grateful for our sales pitch, and even had a taker as we were leaving.

Actually, getting a seat anywhere is quite a coup—Stephanie and I have been known to just plop ourselves down on the ground and stare at feet going by while we much on our sausage dogs. So this really was fine dining, all things considered.

I didn't take as many pictures this last time—wish I had though. I always come home so inspired by the creative souls that show up. It's just a feast for the eyes. This gal on the right is there every month, always smiling, always looking fabulous. Just look at that hat and purse she made—heck, she probably made every item she's wearing! I told her that I want to be her when I grow up. Really, I do. I'd better start practicing soon though...

And these tights are just a hoot, aren't they? Now you know what to do with all those jars of buttons you've been amassing. Not sure I could get away with that, but it does give me ideas! What are your favorite finds at your local flea market? I'd love to hear about them!

All this gathering and sorting, plotting and planning for the upcoming retreat is just a blast. This is the part I love--cooking up all the fun stuff and envisioning all of us up there, just soaking up the creative energy. There's still room for you if you'd like to join us! Pure Magic...

An Artful Journey retreat ended a week ago, but there's still a soft buzz in the air around here. I'm still floating along, not nearly ready to move on from the incredible aura that was created up there on that mountain. A community of artists, most of them strangers on that first day, came together and created pure magic.

It was a combination of the peaceful venue, the talented and giving instructors, the Presentation Center staff, and every single attendee, each of whom arrived with an open, willing spirit. Just look at these beautiful faces.

Even the weather cooperated. The forecasts were for rain every day, but we had just a day and a bit of drizzly soft sprinkles. Amazing.

There was a collective consciousness in that sacred place among the redwoods, and I'm so grateful to have witnessed it. I know that the effects of that time together will ripple out and touch others, as it touched us when we were there. What a gift.

Words don't do it justice. All I know for sure is that we were meant to be there together—no doubt about it.

Oops, I'm really late in following up on the challenge I posted last time. Sorry about that--been crazy busy with getting ready for the retreat next week (fun busy though)!

I was pretty certain that nobody would guess the details of the picture I posted--well, I was wrong about that! Beth got it right--It's a packing tape transfer of a magazine image floating in a sink of water (on the 15th floor of a Seattle hotel when I was there in November, to be specific). Now you know how I spend my spare time when flying and staying at hotels. I always take packing tape and small scissors on the airplane, and then go through all the magazines. I've even asked for a cup of water and done the transfers right there on the plane--someone invariable asks me what the heck I'm doing. I've met some really nice people that way--Try it!

Preparations for the Journey are in full swing (I'd share the details, but it's all hush-hush) I've been up to my eyeballs in fabric, threads, vintage papers, and other delightful things. I'm having so much fun preparing for the first Artful Journey retreat next month~the Center is full and we've got a great group coming from all over the US and as far away as the UK and Australia. Can't wait to greet them all as they embark on their own creative journey!

Although the Center is full and registration closes on Feb. 1, there are still spaces in all of the classes for the July retreat! After working on this one, I'm growing more and more excited for the next one--with the five instructors I have lined up, it's going to be another great event. And there's really something for everybody. If you're interested, sign up soon--I expect that this one will also fill as we get closer to the summer. Whaaa? Summer already? Yup, that's how quickly time is flying around here...

What would I do without my helpers?!

And because I'm in a quirky kind of mood today (might be the cold meds), I'm going to offer a free gift to the person who comes closest to guessing what this is below (we already know they're feet, but where'd they come from, and what are they doing?)

A brief intermission...

Just taking a break from the preparations for the Feb. retreat to announce a NEW CLASS for the July retreat. Richard Salley has put together a brand-spanking new workshop for the retreat here in Los Gatos later this year. It's not being taught anywhere else and it's just over-the-top fabulous! Take a look at just a couple of the photos he supplied--aren't they amazing?

The class is a 3-day workshop called "Blowing the Lid Off! Uncommon Jewelry with Common Objects". He uses jar lids, wire, sari fabric, rusty nails, even a shark's tooth! (Not that you're likely to have too many of those lying around the house!)

Go read all about it here, along with the retreat details and all the rest of the class offerings. Three days of creative bliss! Now is just the time to be planning fun stuff for the summer--and here in the redwoods of northern CA is just the right place. It's less than an hour from San Francisco and only 20 minutes to the coastline. I hope this season is being kind to you and yours. It's hard to imagine that another year is almost over...let's hope that 2010 will be a year of healing and good fortune for all!

I've been trying to get a photo of Max in his Xmas attire, but he's not cooperating at all--he's turned into something of a grinch I'm afraid. No ho-ho spirit at all. All I asked was that he let me put on some little elf ears and shoes so that I could take a photo. But no, he would only agree to this jingly collar, and only one photo. And look at that scowl--hmph, I'm thinking he's going to get some coal in his stocking. No catnip this time around.

On another note, have you seen what the uber-talented DJ Pettitt is up to now?! She's offering an amazing online Photoshop class--YES! I've known DJ for a few years now and I've always said that she's the hardest working artist I know. Her development of this workshop is no exception, and I know for sure that it's worth well over the price of admission! Class registration closes on January 4, so hurry on over and check it out here.

And how lucky are we that she's teaching at An Artful Journey in February AND in July of next year? Her class is filled for the February retreat, but there's still space next July. It's not too early to be dreaming of summer...

In addition to DJ, there's Richard Salley, Stephanie Lee, Katie Kendrick and Judy Wise--all amazingly talented instructors and kind, warmhearted souls. Just the kind of people I want to surround myself with in the new year. How about you? Journalfest Memories...

This post is long overdue but the fond memories of attending Journalfest in Port Townsend are still fresh in my mind. It was a great retreat, as are all events that Teesha and Tracy host. I flew into Seattle where I met up with Robin for the drive over to Fort Worden. I haven't been up there for a few years and I've missed it so much.

We had great weather, as you can see. It was brisk but absolutely gorgeous!

We spent three days taking classes, shooting photos, hanging out with friends, walking around town, and doing some good eating. Oh yeh, and we did some journaling too!

I had a great class with Orly Avinieri--if you ever get a chance to take a workshop with her, do it! Such an interesting woman, and a wonderful spirit--she's a sheer joy.

It was pouring when we woke up the next morning, so we took advantage of our time there and did some journaling in the hotel room.

Once the rain subsided, we wandered down to the Public Market where I got these shots--fresh produce and weathered wall posters.
This fish decor was in the Dahlia Lounge, one of chef Tom Douglas' fabulous restaurants. We had an amazing lunch, then went next door to the Dahlia Bakery. The only thing I remember was the Coconut Pie Bite. I'm not particularly fond of coconut pie, but this was to die for. Seriously. We walked down the streets of Seattle, just licking our fingers and groaning--must've raised some eyebrows! We had eaten at the Palace Kitchen the night before, one of his other restaurants. The food there was impressive as well, so if you're in town, you might want to check out one of his haunts. Good stuff!

An Artful Journey Registration

An Artful Journey July 18-22, 2010--registration opens tomorrow at noon!

I've got a great group of instructors, each of whom is teaching a 3-day class in order to provide you with the luxury of really exploring a project in-depth. Stephanie Lee has developed a brand-new workshop, Foundology, brimming with jewelry-making techniques that will unearth the latent archeologist in you.

Judy Wise is taking her dollmaking/journaling talents to a whole new level in her Storybook Dolls class (can you imagine the cast of characters that will come out of that class??)

The fabulous artist/jeweler Richard Salley is offering a full three days of metalsmithing in his Cold Connection Extravaganza class--a great opportunity to really learn the craft.

In DJ Pettitt's class, Synergy of Forms, she'll share newly developed techniques as well as familiar ones, as you create collage pages that will then be bound into a true work of art.

And Katie Kendrick will help you work from your intuition in her new workshop, Dream Narratives, using fabric, painting, drawing, stitching, and other techniques.
We're going to have a seriously fabulous time at the Presentation Center in the Santa Cruz mountains, hanging out, making art, sharing, talking--maybe doing a little swimming, a little hiking. You know, all that cool California stuff. You should join us!

I took a little journey to Houston, checking out the International Quilt Show there. DJ and I went and helped out a bit in Lesley Riley's booth, wandered the aisles, took some photos, and had some adventures in our short time there, including: getting stuck in an elevator (and not even realizing it had stopped); riding a bikecab for the first time; being evacuated from the hotel; taking photos at midnight on the downtown streets; leaving purses and suitcases in various places; having my return flight canceled, etc.

And we ran into familiar (and not so familiar) faces! It was a nice surprise...

Quick post as I'm running from one adventure to yet another. Houston was an interesting trip--more on that later. Right now I"m trying to get packed to leave for Journalfest in Port Townsend, WA. Sharing the bounty...

Lest you think my 'hunting and gathering' interests lie exclusively with fabrics, think again. I love vintage ledgers, old script, diaries, bookkeeping records, all of them. They conjure up memories of summers spent at my grandparent's in Walnut Grove--a much simpler, slower time.

It's impossible to convey in a photo just how HUGE these books are--they are so heavy that I can't even lift the three of them (and I carry around both grandkids all the time!). They date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's and were filled with layer upon layer of old invoices at one time. Some of them are missing now, but there are still plenty to share! (I can only claim 1/2 ownership of the largest book, due to an unintentional Ebay 'bidding war' with a friend, but that's a story for another time!)

And this gorgeous book from a horse stable has page after page of meticulous handwritten records of "horses bought and sold" from 1901-1905. It was not inexpensive, but worth every penny.

We left at 7am for the Flea Market yesterday, expecting fog, cold and wind. Instead we got this--a perfectly beautiful fall day with the San Francisco skyline greeting us. No wonder all these people are heading that way...we just followed the crowds.

I didn't purchase much on this trip (well, except for the 7' tiered, rusted iron garden thingie that now sits in my living room with fabric spilling out of it) but I managed to take a few photos.

Seems like most folks were in a contemplative mood, except for this fellow, who just looked a bit stunned by all the activity.

Stephanie pretty much summed up our mood for the day!

Friday...

The weather here in northern California is so fabulous that it's darn near impossible to stay indoors. So we've all just been hanging out a bit, enjoying the change of seasons. Max and the girls are already feeling a bit sad that the swim season is over, but then they don't know how quickly it'll come around again. Me? I'm loving every single moment of this glorious day, coming inside just long enough for an iced tea and a quick post.

And what do you think the odds are that I can find another treasure like this at the Antiques Show this weekend? This is the first celluloid album I've ever seen in the shape of a fan--pretty cool, eh?

I don't need another darn thing, but that's never stopped me! My goal this time around is to take lots of photos (and partake of the fresh, warm, melt-in your-mouth, to-die-for donuts and the polish sausage--all in the name of tradition...and a bit of gluttony, truth be told) Hoping you have a great weekend as well!

Wide Open

It's been quite a month. This journey I'm on keeps winding round and around, then veering off; speeding along and then slowing to a crawl; narrowing to a pinpoint and then opening up wider than I could ever have imagined. Staying open--to change, to possibilities, to the gifts that are present in each moment--is a challenge at times, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Time to move on and greet the Fall--it's always been my favorite time of the year.

Shedding the old; hunkering down in preparation...it feels so full of hope and promise to me.

The Necessities

I am so smitten with flea markets right now. Luckily, my favorite one isn't held every week or I'd get absolutely nothing done around here! I've been meeting the most fabulous people, finding all kinds of little treasures, and have been taking tons of photos. I fell in love with these yoghurt jars from Hungary--the second one from the right found a new home. It spoke to me...
But this is what makes my heart really go thumpity-thump--finding vintage fabrics and handmade pieces, remnants, and one-of-a-kind bits that have a history. I wonder where they've been, how well-traveled they are, and whose hands they've passed through on their journey to me. And then to be able to share them with others who appreciate them like I do, who will use them in their artwork or garments--well, it just thrills me to no end! Yep, sheer bliss...

I really loved this 'pile of pigs', but couldn't afford the whole gang. And I just didn't have the heart to separate them, so they'll just have to hang out there for the time-being. (That little one on top is such a momma's boy--he squeals whenever she even hints that she might need a few minutes alone!)

And this nice-looking dude was prowling around on his own, looking for new digs. He seemed decent enough, and a bit lonely, so I offered to bring him home and let him live in my little vegetable garden. He seems content with his surroundings, but he's on the lookout for a mate. It could be awhile though... (Just between you and me, he's not as hot as he thinks he is--plus, he's very moody. Who knew?)

And then there's Max...the cat that adopted me three weeks ago (scroll down to read his story). It was easy-going at first, but that all changed a ten days ago. He got very sick and I was at the vet's almost every day this past week for fluids, tests, xrays, etc. After I spent a small fortune and every test came back negative, he had a miraculous recovery! Seriously, two days ago (right after some expensive tests) he just snapped right out of it. I don't know what the moral to this story is (get 2nd opinions? wait longer for testing?) but it doesn't matter anymore. I'm thankful he's healthy and happy now, and VERY grateful that I wasn't forced to make a decision about whether or not I could afford to keep him. So, so grateful...

And Piper is happy too because now she has someone else to play games with! Here she is teaching him how to play a matching game. Max is a fast learner, so I expect they'll be having chess matches before too long. Piper's birthday is today (3 years young), so having Max back to his old self is the best gift ever!

Cat adoption?

No, this isn't a plea to go out and adopt a kitty. This is what happens when a cat decides to adopt YOU! So happens this furry bundle (a stray) was hit by a car on Saturday in my son's neighborhood, and guess who got the call? They were convinced he was severely injured and needed to go to the Emergency Vet, etc.--of course, I zoomed over. (That's what 'moms/nonnis' do, right?) Once I got everyone to stand back in case he lashed out, I opened the box and carefully peeped in to see what we were dealing with. One look and I knew I was in BIG trouble. He looked up at me, our eyes locked, and he said, "You are my keeper. Take me home--NOW."

So, after a Vet ER visit (I talked them into doing an exam for free...I know, that doesn't happen), a few days of pampered R&R; $200 or so worth of cat supplies; $100+ for vaccinations, etc., he's decided he's officially adopted us. Now all I need to do is get him neutered...and fast! But he's absolutely fit into the family, and we already feel like he's been here forever. Funny how animals choose us like that...no accident, that's for sure. (We named him Maxwell, but he prefers Max)

Piper is his favorite; I found them like this the other night when she was watching cartoons on nonni's bed. Purrrrr.........

Okay, so not everyone in the family has been adopted so readily by Max--this whirling dirvish is going to need a little more time to convince Max that his kitty body parts will be intact after Riley visits him. And Riley pretty much looks like this a good part of the time....can you say 'high-energy'?!?

Okay, back to work for me! Sure is fun having a kitty around again though!

Oh wow, what a week! The Feb. retreat registration has been open just one week and it's already 3/4 full--I have been overjoyed and humbled at the response. I just can't wait to put faces to all the names that have come to me via email this week--SO many kind comments and so much enthusiasm. This is why I do this 'organizing' thing that I do. It really is.

If you registered already, you would have received an email from me by now, so please check your spam or trash folder if you haven't seen it yet. They've all gone out (although I suppose it's possible I missed one--but I DO know with 100% certainty that everyone has been logged in, so please contact me right away if you haven't seen your confirmation. What a day! Registration has been open just over 12 hours and the event is about 2/3 filled already! I'm over-the-moon thrilled that so many of you want to join me for the first full retreat of An Artful Journey. If you're planning on coming, I strongly suggest that you register real soon, as a couple of the classes are close to filling. Do be sure you put down a 2nd choice at this point..even a third! Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the five instructors--they're all fabulous and I invited them because they're the best in the business. Plus, we're all going to hang together and get to know one another during the event, so come and join us!

For those of you who registered yesterday, July 15, you'll be pleased to know that you got your 1st choice of workshop! I know some of you have been biting your nails off, hoping you got your favorite instructor. I just finished making some changes on the website, so go take a look! You'll find more info on the retreat lodging, changes in payment method (checks, please...), and easy instructions on how to register for the February 2010 all-inclusive retreat. REGISTRATION Opens Wednesday, July 15 at noon Pacific time, so be sure to check it out before then!

With the five talented and popular instructors lined up for this retreat (Nina Bagley, Lesley Riley, DJ Pettitt, Kelly Rae Roberts/Mati McDonough, and Albie Smith), you'll want to sign up early as space is limited to 22 students in each class! One class, one instructor for 3 blissful days--a retreat in the truest sense of the word. Designed for you to relax, recharge, and immerse yourself in art, nature and fellowship. Letting go and Moving On

I am so filled with gratitude these days that I'm about to burst wide open. It's amazing how, when you REALLY live in the moment, on the deepest level, you realize that you have everything you need. Right now. Finding that sense of peace and serenity inside oneself, no matter what or who is swirling around you, is what it's really all about, isn't it? It's all good--and so much more...

Speaking of good stuff, I've been having such fun preparing for Katie's and Judy's arrival next week--sending out mailings, planning the food, gathering supplies. There's still space in Judy's class; just click on the photo under Day Journeys to the right there.

I'm looking forward to nothing but art and good friends for a few days--we all need that from time to time, right? The fellowship, the sharing of ideas, the enthusiasm and the bonding that take place in these workshops are critical to my well-being and to my emotional health. So I'm looking forward to receiving a good jolt to maintain that equilibrium!

But before I can kick back and absorb all the creative energy flowing from Katie, Judy, and the attendees, I've got a number of other things to take care of first: getting registration ready to open this Wed, July 1 for the Encaustic Journaling class (see all the Day Journeys on the right-hand side there); feverishly preparing for the July 15 registration opening for the Feb. 2010 full retreat;; putting together Provisions for the Journeys packets; following up on ideas for the coming year (oh, you just wait!); and of course, spending time with the grandbabies. That's the one thing I always make time for--how could I not?!

First, an update on the July and August workshops: Katie's class is now full, but if you'd like to be placed on the waiting list, just email me. I've still got spots in Judy's July class and in Leighanna's classes in August. Check out the links on the right side there, under Day Journeys.

And I'm thrilled to announce another Day Journey class on Sat/Sun, Sept. 19 & 20. Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch (aka Trish) will be here to teach a 2-day workshop entitled, "Encaustic Journaling". And I don't mind saying, this is going to be fabulous--just take a look at these luscious photos! And she'll be supplying all the encaustic stuff, so you don't have to run out and buy a ton of supplies. The description and all details will be on the website in the next few days, and I'm hoping to open registration on July 1. Will update you here!

There's Still Time...

to sign up for the July workshops with Judy Wise and Katie Kendrick! Judy's over on her blog having one heck of a plaster fit! What a wonderful medium to work with, and the techniques can transfer over into other areas as well. I just love the abstract look she's able to achieve--isn't it gorgeous? So if you're in the mood to explore and spend the day with this wonderful, wise, generous soul, then hop on over here and sign up. We're going to have a grand old time!

And Katie's class is just about full--what a great couple of days we're going to have. And of course, food is part of the deal, including the now famous "official" Day Journey cookies--the BEST chocolate chip, pecan cookie you've ever had. I See Dead People

OK, so this post doesn't have much (actually, nothing) to do with the retreats or workshops, but I just had to share these photos that I took when Stephanie and I made yet another trek to Scrap. We ended up sorta kinda lost, but what a great place to get lost in!

The dead guy is actually a theater prop, as is the statuary...AND these were 'drive-by' shootings ala DJ Pettitt, so I'm going to blame my new obsession on her...

This guy was on a street corner with his 'idea' sign--we couldn't figure out if he was selling ideas or wanting to buy ideas to plant on his farm. I had a bunch of ideas that I was willing to part with, but the light was green and I couldn't figure out how to stop--next time!
Hope you're taking some time out for being silly and playful--nothing beats a good laugh!

More gifts...

I don't know about you but I've sure been feeling that there's been a shift of late--a flow of abundance and gifts presenting themselves. I know they've always been there--they're just easier to see when you're present, and not living in the past, or worrying about the future. Guess that's why it's called the 'present'. Each moment is a gift and I'm grateful for all of them!

My good friend, Robin, came down for a visit, and we just hopped from one wonderful adventure to another. We're both wanting to collect 'evidence' with our cameras these days, so I'll just leave the photos to speak for themselves.

This pretty much sums up my state of mind these days. Have a great week!
